About this calculator
Solar panel sizing starts from your monthly energy usage, converts it to a daily average, and divides by how much energy one panel produces per day given your region's peak sun hours and the panel's wattage, then adds a system inefficiency buffer for inverter and wiring losses.

How many solar panels do I need?
For 900 kWh/month usage with 5 peak sun hours a day, 400W panels, and 80% system efficiency, you need about 19 panels, forming a roughly 7.5 kW system.
What are 'peak sun hours'?
It's the equivalent number of hours per day sunlight is intense enough to produce a panel's rated output — sunny states like Arizona average 6-7 hours, while cloudier northern regions average 3-4.
Why include a system efficiency factor?
Real-world solar systems lose 15-25% of rated output to inverter conversion, wiring resistance, panel soiling, and temperature effects, so ignoring this understates the panels you actually need.
Does roof space limit how many panels I can install?
Yes — a standard 400W panel is about 18 sq ft, so a 19-panel system needs roughly 340 sq ft of usable, unshaded roof space, which can be a constraint on smaller roofs.
