A hardwired Level 2 home charger plus electrician install typically runs $800-$2,500 depending on panel capacity and run length. This calculator compares that upfront cost against the per-kWh savings of charging at home overnight versus relying on public Level 2 or DC fast charging, factoring in any state or utility rebate for home charger installs (many utilities offer $200-$500 rebates to encourage off-peak charging). It answers the practical question: given how much you drive, does the install cost make sense before you just keep using the public network or the included Level 1 cord.

FAQ

Is a Level 2 charger worth it if I have a free Level 1 cord?

A Level 1 cord (regular 120V outlet) adds roughly 3-5 miles of range per hour, which struggles to fully replenish a battery overnight after a long commute. Level 2 adds 20-40 miles per hour and comfortably refills any daily driving pattern overnight, which is really a convenience and reliability argument as much as a cost one.

What drives install cost variation?

The biggest factor is panel capacity and distance from the panel to the charger location. A garage right next to the electrical panel with available capacity might cost $400-$600 to wire; a detached garage or a panel needing an upgrade can run $2,000-$4,000+. Get a quote before assuming the default numbers here.

Do utility rebates for home chargers still exist?

Many utilities offer $200-$500 rebates or bill credits for installing a networked Level 2 charger, partly because it lets them shift your charging to off-peak hours via demand-response programs. Does this make sense if I rarely use public charging anyway?
