About this calculator

The FOB or contract price quoted for green coffee is never what a roaster actually pays per pound landed at the roastery. Ocean freight, import duties, customs broker fees, warehouse handling, and cargo insurance all add to the number, and small roasters buying through importers often see 15-30% added to the base green price by the time beans arrive ready to roast. This calculator takes your base green price and adds each landed-cost component per pound so you can compare quotes from different importers or origins on an apples-to-apples basis, since a slightly higher FOB price with included freight can beat a cheaper FOB quote that leaves you to arrange your own logistics and absorb variable freight costs.

FormulaLanded cost/lb = base price/lb + freight/lb + duty/lb + handling/lb + financing cost/lb.

FAQ

Do I pay import duty on green coffee from most origins?

Raw/green coffee generally enters the US duty-free under current US tariff schedules from most origin countries under normal trade status, though this can change with trade policy shifts, so always verify current duty treatment for your specific origin country rather than assuming zero, especially given periodic tariff changes.

How much does freight really add per pound?

For a full container (roughly 37,500 lb / 250 bags), ocean freight commonly adds $0.03-0.08 per pound depending on origin and current shipping rates, which spiked far higher during 2021-2022 supply chain disruptions. Smaller consolidated shipments through an importer typically bake freight into a per-pound price already, which is why comparing importer quotes against DIY container imports needs this landed-cost math to be fair.

Why include a financing cost?

If you buy a full container and it sits in a warehouse for two or three months before you roast through it, that's capital tied up not earning anything, which is a real cost even if no interest is literally being paid, especially if you used a line of credit to make the purchase. Smaller roasters buying smaller quantities more frequently can often skip this line.

Accuracy and limitations

  • Results are estimates before tax, fees, and inflation unless an input explicitly covers them.
  • Rates are treated as fixed for the whole period — variable-rate products will drift from this projection.
  • This is educational maths, not financial advice. Check anything contractual with the lender or your accountant.
