About this calculator
Many merit scholarships pay in fixed tiers keyed to GPA cutoffs, so a small GPA improvement can be worth thousands of dollars if it crosses a threshold, or worth nothing if it doesn't. This calculator compares the scholarship value at your current GPA tier against the next tier up, and divides the dollar gain by the tutoring or extra-effort cost needed to get there, giving a clear return on that specific push.
Worked example
Using the values the calculator loads with:
Inputs
- Scholarship at current GPA tier: 4000 $
- Scholarship at next GPA tier: 8000 $
- Years the award applies: 4
- Cost to push GPA up (tutoring, etc.): 1500 $
Results
- Total scholarship value gained: $16,000
- Net value after prep cost: $14,500
- Per-year award increase: $4,000
- Return on prep investment: 967%

FAQ
Are GPA scholarship tiers really that abrupt?
Yes, many institutional merit scholarships use hard cutoffs (e.g., 3.5 vs 3.75 unweighted GPA) rather than a sliding scale, so a single grade in one class can be worth thousands of dollars over four years.
How do I find the actual cutoffs?
Check the target school's published merit scholarship matrix, usually cross-referencing GPA and test score bands. These are public for most state schools and many private ones.
Does weighted vs unweighted GPA matter?
Enormously. Confirm which GPA the scholarship matrix uses before calculating — some schools recalculate GPA on a 4.0 unweighted scale regardless of your transcript's weighting.
Is it ever worth it to retake a class for GPA?
Only if the tier gain clearly exceeds the retake cost and time, and if the school's GPA recalculation policy actually replaces the old grade rather than averaging it.
Accuracy and limitations
- Results are estimates before tax, fees, and inflation unless an input explicitly covers them.
- Rates are treated as fixed for the whole period — variable-rate products will drift from this projection.
- This is educational maths, not financial advice. Check anything contractual with the lender or your accountant.
