About this calculator
Garage door pricing is driven by size, insulation grade (R-value), material, and whether you also replace the opener and springs. A basic uninsulated single steel door is the cheap end; an insulated double door with windows and a belt-drive smart opener can be four to five times that. Insulation matters more than most buyers expect on attached garages and any garage below living space, where an R-12 to R-18 door measurably reduces heat transfer. This calculator prices the door by size and grade, adds hardware and opener options, and includes haul-away of the old door. 2026 US national averages run about $1,100-$2,200 installed for a standard insulated single, and $2,000-$4,500 for a double.

FAQ
Is an insulated garage door worth it?
On an attached garage, a garage with rooms above, or any space you heat or work in, yes — R-12 and up noticeably steadies the temperature and stiffens the door panel. On a detached, unconditioned garage, the payback is mostly comfort and quiet.
Do I need a new opener with a new door?
Not necessarily. If the existing opener is under about ten years old, has a working safety reversal, and is rated for the new door's weight, it can usually be reused — insulated doors are heavier, so verify the horsepower rating.
Can I replace just the springs?
Yes, and it is far cheaper — typically $200-$400 installed. Springs are the most common failure point and should never be replaced DIY given the stored energy involved.
Accuracy and limitations
- Results are estimates before tax, fees, and inflation unless an input explicitly covers them.
- Rates are treated as fixed for the whole period — variable-rate products will drift from this projection.
- This is educational maths, not financial advice. Check anything contractual with the lender or your accountant.
