About this calculator
Florists lose money when they price off 'what feels right' instead of actual stem cost. This calculator takes wholesale cost per stem, stem count per arrangement, hard goods (vase, foam, ribbon), and design labor time, then applies your target markup multiplier to land on a retail price. Wedding florists typically need a 3x-to-4x multiplier on hard costs (flowers plus mechanics) to cover labor, delivery, setup/breakdown, waste, and studio overhead — well above simple retail flower shop markups of 2x-2.5x.

FAQ
Why is the markup applied only to hard costs, not labor?
Labor is already priced at your actual rate, so multiplying it again double-counts profit on time you're billing directly. The markup on flowers and hard goods needs to be high because it also has to cover waste (5-15% of stems get tossed for quality), delivery vehicle cost, cooler/storage overhead, and design risk that a straight cost-plus-labor model misses.
Is 3x-4x too aggressive for wedding flowers?
No — it's standard in the industry. Wedding work involves delivery, on-site installation, breakdown, and often after-hours work that retail counter sales don't. Florists who price wedding work at retail-shop markups (2x-2.5x) consistently report the lowest margins in industry surveys.
How do I account for stem waste?
Either bump your stem count 10-15% above the finished count to model breakage and quality culls, or raise the markup multiplier by 0.2-0.3x. Peonies, ranunculus, and garden roses run higher waste than hardier stems like carnations or greenery.
How should delivery and setup be charged?
Keep it as a separate line item scaled to arrangement count and distance rather than folding it into the multiplier, since delivery cost doesn't scale with flower cost — a $40 bud vase and a $400 arch installation can require the same truck trip.
