How does this compare to renting?

If your per-outing number exceeds a day charter in your area, renting or a club membership is the cheaper path unless you value spontaneity highly.

Why is depreciation the biggest line?

Most boats lose the majority of their value in the first decade, and unlike maintenance it's invisible until you sell.
