About this calculator

Auction drafts require a completely different prep approach than snake drafts: instead of ranking players, you need a dollar budget per position group before you ever open the auction room, or you'll blow 40% of your cap on the first two running backs and be stuck bidding $1 on everyone else. This calculator splits your total budget (standard is $200 per team) across starting positions using percentage targets you can adjust for your league's scoring format, and reserves a bench allocation so you don't spend your entire cap on starters and end up with only $1 bench pieces. Standard guidance in most redraft leagues allocates roughly 60-70% of budget to your top handful of starters (usually RB/WR-heavy), leaving the remainder split between mid-tier starters and bench depth. Adjust the position percentages based on your league's scoring — heavier PPR formats generally shift more budget toward receivers, while standard scoring skews more toward workhorse running backs.

FormulaPosition budget = total cap × position allocation %. Remaining bench budget = total cap − sum of allocated starter budgets, reserved as $1-2 minimums per remaining roster spot.

FAQ

Why do RBs usually get the biggest budget share?

Running back is typically the shallowest position with the steepest talent drop-off after the top tier, and workhorse backs with guaranteed touch share are historically the hardest wins to replace late or on waivers, which is why standard auction strategy front-loads RB spending relative to its roster share.

Should I change these percentages for a PPR or superflex league?

Yes — heavier PPR scoring closes some of the RB/WR value gap and often shifts a few percentage points of budget toward WR, while superflex leagues (that start two QBs) should meaningfully increase QB allocation, sometimes to 20%+ of total budget, since a second startable QB becomes a scarce, highly valuable roster spot.

What's the risk of not setting a budget before the draft?

Auction drafts move fast and it's easy to get anchored on winning a specific star player, overspending on the first few nominations, and then having almost nothing left for the remaining 12-15 roster spots. A pre-set budget by position is the single easiest way to avoid ending a draft with a strong top-3 and an unusable bench.
