About this calculator
EDR/XDR licensing is usually quoted per-endpoint-per-month, but real budgeting needs to account for tiered pricing (most vendors give volume discounts past 500-1000 seats), a mix of endpoint types (servers often cost more per seat than laptops), and add-on modules like managed detection and response (MDR) or threat hunting that can double the base price. This calculator applies a blended rate across workstation, server, and mobile/other endpoint counts, layers in an optional MDR add-on percentage, and shows both monthly and annual totals plus a cost-per-endpoint figure you can compare against vendor quotes. It also flags the volume discount tier you likely qualify for, since many teams keep renewing at list price years after crossing a discount threshold simply because nobody re-negotiates.
Worked example
Using the values the calculator loads with:
Inputs
- Workstation/laptop endpoints: 400
- Workstation rate ($/endpoint/month): 6
- Server endpoints: 60
- Server rate ($/endpoint/month): 14
- Other endpoints (mobile, IoT): 100
- Other rate ($/endpoint/month): 3
- MDR/managed hunting add-on (% of base): 40
Results
- Annual EDR licensing cost: $53,525
- Monthly total: $4,460
- Blended cost per endpoint/month: $7.96
- Total endpoints licensed: 560
- Volume discount tier applied: 10%

FAQ
Why do servers cost more per seat than workstations?
Servers run more processes, generate far more telemetry volume for the vendor's cloud backend to ingest and store, and typically need higher-touch tuning to avoid false positives on legitimate server behavior like backup jobs or database maintenance, all of which vendors price into the higher server-tier rate.
Is MDR worth the add-on cost?
If you don't have a 24/7 SOC watching EDR alerts, yes, since unmonitored EDR alerts are just noise sitting in a console. A 30-50% add-on for managed detection and response is common and often cheaper than hiring even one additional analyst, though it works best as a bridge, not a permanent substitute for in-house capability at larger organizations.
How do I actually get the volume discount?
Vendors rarely apply it automatically at renewal, you generally have to ask, reference the endpoint count growth since your last contract, and sometimes threaten to run a competitive RFP. Building the expected discount into your budget ahead of the renewal conversation gives you a number to hold the vendor to.
Should IoT and mobile devices really be on EDR?
Traditional EDR agents don't run well on most IoT and many mobile platforms, so 'other' endpoints are usually covered by lighter mobile threat defense or network-based monitoring rather than full EDR, which is why their per-seat rate is typically much lower in vendor pricing.
Accuracy and limitations
- Results are estimates before tax, fees, and inflation unless an input explicitly covers them.
- Rates are treated as fixed for the whole period — variable-rate products will drift from this projection.
- This is educational maths, not financial advice. Check anything contractual with the lender or your accountant.
