About this calculator
Square footage utilization hides the real story in a warehouse because most buildings have clear heights of 24-40 feet that go mostly unused with single-deep racking or floor stacking. Cubic utilization divides the volume actually occupied by inventory by the total usable cubic volume of the facility, giving a truer picture of whether you need more building or just better racking. A facility running 90% floor space utilization but only 45% cubic utilization has a slotting and racking problem, not a square footage problem — the fix is taller racking, narrower aisles, or mezzanines, not a bigger lease. This calculator also flags the gap between your current and a realistic target utilization so you can size the payback on a racking investment before committing capital.

FAQ
What's a good cubic utilization target?
Well-run distribution centers with proper racking to near the clear height run 65-80% cubic utilization. Below 50% usually means single-deep racking, floor-stacked slow movers, or excessive aisle width for the truck fleet in use. Above 85% often means you're out of flexibility for seasonal spikes and should be planning expansion.
Why isn't fill factor just 100%?
Aisles, cross-aisles, dock staging, and fire code clearances all consume cube that can never hold inventory. A realistic fill factor after aisles and staging is usually 45-65% of the raw floor-times-height volume, and narrow-aisle or very-narrow-aisle trucks push that toward the high end by shrinking aisle width.
How does this connect to a racking investment decision?
If your cubic utilization is low because you're floor-stacking to a fraction of clear height, adding selective or double-deep racking to use the full clear height can multiply pallet capacity in the same footprint. Compare the racking cost against the cost of leasing additional square footage to hit the same capacity — racking almost always wins when clear height exceeds 24 feet.
Does inventory mix affect this number?
Significantly. Slow-moving, low-cube SKUs stored in full pallet positions waste more cube than fast movers picked in cases, because the pallet position is sized for the tallest, bulkiest SKU that could occupy it. Running an ABC slotting review alongside this calculation usually finds more usable cube than adding racking does.
