About this calculator

A credit card balance is a compounding problem disguised as a monthly bill. Because the minimum payment is usually a small percentage of the balance plus interest, it falls as the balance falls, which stretches payoff for years and can more than double what you repay. This calculator answers the two questions that matter: how long the balance takes to clear at the payment you actually make, and how much interest that costs. It also models a fixed extra payment so you can see the leverage — on a typical 24% APR balance, an extra $100 a month often cuts years off the timeline. Results assume no new purchases on the card; adding charges resets the math.

FormulaEach month: interest = balance × APR ÷ 12; balance = balance + interest − payment. Repeat until zero.

FAQ

Why does my card statement show a longer payoff?

Statements use the issuer's declining minimum payment. This tool uses the fixed payment you enter, which clears the balance far faster.

Does the tool assume new purchases?

No. Any new spending on the card extends the timeline and adds interest that is not shown here.

Is a balance transfer better?

Often, if you can clear most of the balance inside the promotional window and the transfer fee is smaller than the interest avoided.

What if the payment never clears the balance?

If your payment is below the monthly interest charge, payoff shows as capped. That means the balance grows — raise the payment or seek a hardship rate.
