About this calculator
Starting at a community college for two years before transferring to a four-year university can cut tuition costs substantially, while going straight to a university means paying the full rate for all four years but may offer better networking, housing, and campus experience earlier. This tool totals tuition, fees, and estimated housing for each path over four years to show the total cost gap.

FAQ
Does the degree look different if I transfer?
No — your diploma comes from the university you graduate from, not where you started, so a transfer path produces an identical degree at lower cost in most cases.
Will all my community college credits transfer?
Not always — check articulation agreements between your community college and target university before enrolling to make sure gen-ed credits transfer cleanly.
Does this include financial aid?
No — this compares sticker-price costs; need-based aid, scholarships, and grants can significantly change the real cost of either path and should be factored in separately.
Accuracy and limitations
- Results are estimates before tax, fees, and inflation unless an input explicitly covers them.
- Rates are treated as fixed for the whole period — variable-rate products will drift from this projection.
- This is educational maths, not financial advice. Check anything contractual with the lender or your accountant.
