About this calculator
Ceremony musicians are usually paid per musician per hour with a minimum call time (commonly a 1-1.5 hour minimum even for a 20-minute ceremony, since setup, sound check, and prelude music all take real time). FAQ
Why is there a minimum call time for a 20-minute ceremony?
Musicians need to arrive early to set up, tune, and sound-check, then typically play 20-30 minutes of prelude music while guests are seated before the processional itself, which is often under 5 minutes. A 1-1.5 hour minimum reflects the real on-site time even though the visible 'performance' guests remember is short.
How many musicians does a typical ceremony use?
A string quartet (two violins, viola, cello) is the classic choice for a fuller sound, while a duo (violin and cello, or violin and guitar) is common for smaller or budget-conscious ceremonies, and a soloist works for very intimate or outdoor settings where a bigger ensemble would be hard to hear anyway.
What does a booking agency commission cover?
It covers the agency's marketing, scheduling, contract handling, and the guarantee they provide the couple that a substitute musician will be found if someone can't perform. 10%-20% is a typical commission range; independent musicians booking directly keep the full labor total instead.
