About this calculator

In-bay automatic (IBA) washes serve one car at a time in a single bay, unlike a conveyor tunnel, and typically run lower volume but also lower capital cost per site. This calculator answers the question every owner and every customer implicitly asks: at what visit frequency does an unlimited monthly membership beat paying per wash, and what's the revenue difference to the operator between a customer who washes twice a month versus one who washes weekly. For the operator side, it computes bay-hours required to serve your car count and revenue per bay-hour, useful for judging whether a single IBA bay or a second bay is the right capacity call.

FormulaBreakeven visits = membership price ÷ per-wash price. Bay-hours needed = cars/day × minutes per wash ÷ 60. Revenue per bay-hour = daily revenue ÷ bay-hours operated.

FAQ

At what visit frequency does membership make sense for a customer?

If breakeven comes out to roughly 2.1 visits per month, any customer who washes more than twice a month saves money on membership. Operators price membership around 2-2.5x the single-wash price specifically so the breakeven lands in a range most regular customers will cross.

How does IBA capacity differ from a tunnel?

A single IBA bay realistically serves 8-12 cars per hour at full tilt versus 80-150+ for a tunnel, so IBA sites depend on either multiple bays or lower total volume expectations. IBA's advantage is lower land and equipment cost, making it viable on smaller or lower-traffic sites where a tunnel wouldn't pencil.

When should I add a second bay?

Once bay capacity utilization consistently exceeds 65-70% during operating hours, you're likely losing sales to queue abandonment during peak times, especially weekend mornings. A second bay roughly doubles capacity for well under double the land and equipment cost if the site has room.

Does membership cannibalize per-wash revenue?

Some, especially from your most frequent existing customers who would have paid full price anyway. The net win depends on membership pulling in enough new frequency and volume from occasional or new customers to offset the discount given to already-frequent washers.
