About this calculator
Car seats aren't a one-time purchase — kids move through infant, convertible, and booster stages based on hitting weight or height limits, whichever comes first, and seats also expire (usually 6-10 years from manufacture) regardless of use. This calculator estimates when your child will likely outgrow their current seat stage using average growth rates, and estimates total remaining spend through booster graduation around age 10-12, so you can budget for the next seat instead of being caught off guard at a weight-limit warning light on the harness.

FAQ
Do car seats really expire?
Yes. Plastic degrades with heat/cold cycling and UV exposure over years, and safety standards evolve, so manufacturers set expiration dates (usually printed on a sticker), typically 6 years for infant seats and 8-10 years for convertible/booster seats. Using an expired seat may also void insurance coverage in a crash claim.
Should I go by weight, height, or age?
Whichever limit is reached first governs the switch — a tall-for-age toddler may hit the height limit (head within an inch of the shell top, or ears above the shell) well before the weight limit. Check both numbers on the seat's label, not just weight.
When can my child move to a booster instead of a harnessed seat?
Most guidance recommends staying in a harnessed convertible seat until at least age 4 and 40 lb minimum, ideally longer, since a harness distributes crash force better than a booster's seatbelt-only restraint. Booster seats are appropriate once a child can sit properly without slouching, generally not before age 5-6.
