About this calculator

Auto insurance pricing looks opaque because carriers publish rates, not rating factors. In practice a personal auto premium is a base rate for your state and vehicle class multiplied by a short list of relative factors: driver age band, years licensed, at-fault accidents and violations in the last three to five years, annual mileage, the liability limits you buy, and the comprehensive and collision deductible you accept. This estimator applies typical US relativities to a base annual premium so you can see the direction and rough size of each decision before you shop. Raising a collision deductible from $500 to $1,000 commonly trims 8-12% off the physical damage portion; a single at-fault accident commonly adds 40% or more for three years; dropping full coverage on an older vehicle removes that portion entirely. Use the output as a planning range and then get real quotes — every carrier weights these factors differently, and state regulation limits which factors may be used at all.

FormulaPremium = Base Rate × Age Factor × Record Factor × Mileage Factor × Limits Factor × Deductible Factor − Discounts.

FAQ

Why does my quote differ from this estimate?

Carriers use hundreds of rating variables including credit-based insurance scores where permitted, garaging ZIP code, vehicle trim, and claims history from shared databases. This tool models the six factors that move premiums most, so treat it as a planning range rather than a quote.

How much does raising my deductible really save?

Only the comprehensive and collision part of the premium responds to the deductible. Going from $500 to $1,000 typically saves under 10% of the total bill, so make sure you can actually fund the higher deductible before taking it.

When should I drop full coverage?

A common test: if annual comp and collision premium exceeds roughly 10% of the car's actual cash value, the coverage is buying back very little. Run the numbers with the liability-only option to see the difference.

Do accidents raise rates forever?

No. Most carriers surcharge for three to five years and then drop the factor, which is why the record input here is limited to recent incidents.

Accuracy and limitations

  • Results are estimates before tax, fees, and inflation unless an input explicitly covers them.
  • Rates are treated as fixed for the whole period — variable-rate products will drift from this projection.
  • This is educational maths, not financial advice. Check anything contractual with the lender or your accountant.
