About this calculator
Craft brewers price beer off feel more often than off actual cost per barrel, and grain, hops, and yeast prices move enough year to year that last year's number is stale. This calculator takes total batch cost across malt, hops, yeast, and adjuncts, adds brewhouse labor and utilities, and divides by barrels produced after accounting for typical brewhouse loss (trub, dead space, transfer loss), which commonly runs 5-10% of kettle volume. A US beer barrel is 31 gallons. Getting this number right per style matters because a hazy IPA loaded with dry hops can cost 3-4x more per barrel in raw materials than a standard lager, and if your taproom prices both styles the same, you're subsidizing the expensive one out of the cheap one's margin.

FAQ
What loss percentage should I assume?
5-8% is typical for a well-run system accounting for trub loss, hose dead space, and centrifuge or filter loss if used. Batches with heavy dry hopping or fruit additions can lose more, sometimes 10-15%, because the solids absorb liquid that never makes it to the bright tank.
Why does this matter more for hazy IPAs and fruited sours?
Those styles use 2-4 lb of hops per barrel versus 0.5-1 lb for a standard IPA, and fruited beers can add $50-150 per barrel in puree cost alone. If you're not costing per style, you're likely underpricing your most expensive beers and overpricing your cheapest ones on the same taplist.
How does this feed into taproom pricing?
