About this calculator

Installation is where sign shops either make good margin or quietly lose it, because travel time, lift/ladder setup, and second-person safety requirements rarely get itemized the way print production does. This calculator adds base install time (hanging, mounting hardware, leveling), a difficulty multiplier for height or wall type, lift/equipment rental if needed, travel time at your loaded labor rate, and a minimum trip charge floor, to produce a defensible install price. Standard banner installs with grommets and rope or zip ties on an accessible wall run 20-40 minutes for a two-person crew; permanent monument or channel letter signs requiring a lift commonly run 3-6 hours including lift setup and electrical hookup. Many shops undercharge because they quote 'labor' as just the hang time and forget drive time, which for a single crew doing 3-4 stops a day easily eats 25-40% of the billable day.

Why apply a minimum trip charge?

A 20-minute banner hang across town still consumes a full truck roll, fuel, and crew scheduling slot. A $100-$200 minimum protects against small jobs that cost more in overhead than they bill, which is common for one-off banner requests.

When does a job need a lift versus a ladder?
