About this calculator
When bail is set, a family has two realistic paths. Post the full amount in cash with the court, which is refundable at the end of the case regardless of outcome, minus any fees the court deducts; or pay a bail bond agent a non-refundable premium, typically 10% of the bail amount and set by state regulation, plus possible collateral. The premium never comes back even if charges are dropped the next day, which is why the cash route is far cheaper whenever the money exists or can be borrowed for a few months. This calculator compares total cost of each path, applies the payment-plan structure agents commonly offer (a down payment plus instalments, sometimes with financing charges), values the collateral you would need to pledge, and shows the effective annualised cost of the bond compared with borrowing the cash. Rates and rules vary by state — a few states have abolished commercial bail entirely — so check local practice before deciding.

FAQ
Is the bond premium ever refunded?
No. The premium is the agent's fee for guaranteeing appearance and is earned as soon as the bond is posted, whether the case ends in dismissal, acquittal, or conviction.
Is cash bail returned in full?
Generally yes at the conclusion of the case if the defendant made all appearances, though many courts deduct an administrative fee and can apply the balance to fines or restitution. That deduction is what the court fee input models.
What can be used as collateral?
Commonly real property, vehicles, or cash held by the agent. Collateral is returned when the bond is exonerated, but liens on property can take time to release, so get the terms in writing.
Can bail be reduced?
Yes — defence counsel can move for a bail reduction hearing, and many jurisdictions have pretrial release programmes that avoid a bond entirely. Ask before paying a premium you cannot recover.
Accuracy and limitations
- Results are estimates before tax, fees, and inflation unless an input explicitly covers them.
- Rates are treated as fixed for the whole period — variable-rate products will drift from this projection.
- This is educational maths, not financial advice. Check anything contractual with the lender or your accountant.
