About this calculator
A standard two-car garage is around 600 square feet, and epoxy coverage is all about mil thickness: the same gallon that covers 300 square feet at 5 mils only covers 150 at 10. A durable system is usually three layers — a penetrating primer, a pigmented base coat with broadcast flake, and a clear polyaspartic or urethane topcoat — and each layer has its own coverage rate. This calculator sizes each layer separately, adds flake by the pound, and totals the material cost so you can compare a DIY kit against a professional install quote, which typically runs $4-$9 per square foot in 2026.

FAQ
How much epoxy for a two-car garage?
About 3 gallons of base coat, 2 of primer, and 3 of topcoat for 600 square feet at typical coverage rates — roughly 8 gallons total for a full three-layer system.
Do I have to grind the concrete?
Mechanical grinding gives the best bond and is what pros do. Acid etching can work on clean, bare, porous slabs, but it fails on sealed or oil-stained concrete, which is the most common cause of epoxy peeling.
Is a DIY kit as durable as a pro install?
Big-box one-part kits are much thinner than professional 100% solids systems. A high-solids two-part epoxy with a polyaspartic topcoat gets you close to pro durability at roughly half the installed price, if the prep is done right.
