About this calculator
Roofing is sold in squares — one square equals 100 square feet of roof surface — and three bundles of standard architectural shingles cover one square. The catch is that a 2,500 square foot house does not have a 2,500 square foot roof: pitch adds surface area, so a 6/12 roof over that footprint is closer to 2,800 square feet of actual deck. This calculator applies your roof pitch factor, adds a waste allowance for hips, valleys, and starter courses, and returns bundle count, squares, underlayment rolls, and an installed cost estimate at your local per-square rate.

How many bundles for a 2,500 sq ft roof?
On a 6/12 pitch with 12% waste that is about 31.3 squares, or roughly 94 bundles of architectural shingles.
Why multiply by a pitch factor?
Footprint is the flat area you measure from above; the sloped deck is always larger. A 6/12 roof has about 12% more surface than its footprint, and a 12/12 roof about 41% more.
Does the estimate include tear-off?
Yes, as a separate per-square line. A single layer of old shingles typically runs $75-$125 per square to remove and dispose of; two layers cost more.
