About this calculator

Sod is sold either as individual rolls/pieces or by the pallet, with a standard pallet typically covering about 450 square feet. This calculator defaults to a 1000 square foot lawn area, applies a waste factor for odd angles and trimming, then returns the number of pallets and total sod pieces needed along with estimated cost.

FormulaAdjusted Area = Area × (1 + Waste%). Pallets = CEILING(Adjusted Area ÷ Sqft per Pallet). Pieces = CEILING(Adjusted Area ÷ Sqft per Piece). Cost = Pallets × Price per Pallet.

FAQ

How many pallets of sod do I need for 1000 sq ft?

At 450 sqft per pallet with a 5% waste allowance, about 3 pallets — confirm your local supplier's exact pallet coverage since it varies by grass type and cut size.

Can I order sod by the piece instead of the pallet?

Yes, for small patch jobs, but for a full 1000 sqft lawn, pallets are almost always cheaper per square foot and easier to schedule delivery for.

How soon after delivery should sod be installed?

Ideally within 24 hours, since rolled sod can begin to yellow and dry out on the pallet within a day or two, especially in hot weather.

Accuracy and limitations

  • Estimates assume standard, average conditions — local rules, pricing, and materials vary.
  • Results are rounded for readability; add a buffer before ordering, booking, or committing.
  • Double-check anything with a real cost attached against a local quote.
