Tile Installation Cost Calculator

Estimate tile installation cost by area, tile type, and pattern — materials, thinset, grout, and labor for floors, showers, and backsplashes.

Short answer

Tile Installation Cost Calculator

$1,680Estimated installed cost

$14.00 per sq ft installed. Floors are the most efficient tile work — big open fields, few cuts. Straight lay is the most material-efficient pattern.

How it's calculated: 120 sq ft of porcelain, floor install. Adjust the inputs below to recalculate for your own numbers.

Disclaimer: Estimates only — not a quote. Home-services pricing varies widely by region, season, site access, permits, and contractor. Always get 2–3 written local quotes before committing.

Formula used

Tile installation cost

Tile labor runs $5–$10/sq ft for floors, $10–$15 for showers, $12–$20 for backsplashes. Materials: ceramic $1.50–$4, porcelain $3–$7, natural stone $6–$15, glass/mosaic $10–$25 per sq ft. Complex patterns add 20–45% labor. Showers add waterproofing membrane at ~$2.50/sq ft.

Total = sq ft × (tile + $1.50 setting materials) + sq ft × labor rate × pattern factor + demo + waterproofing
Floor tile labor
$5–$10/sq ft
Shower tile installed
$15–$30/sq ft
Porcelain material
$3–$7/sq ft

Worked example: 120 sq ft of porcelain floor, straight lay

Material at $4.50/sq ft plus $1.50 setting materials is $720. Labor at $8/sq ft straight lay is $960. Tearing out the old vinyl adds $360. Total lands near $2,040 — $17/sq ft installed, the center of the porcelain floor market. Quotes under $12/sq ft all-in usually mean no uncoupling membrane or a rushed cure schedule, both of which crack grout within two years.

  • Porcelain vs ceramic: porcelain is denser, frost-proof, and through-body — worth the $2/sq ft premium on floors.
  • Large-format tile (24×24+) needs a flatter subfloor (1/8 in over 10 ft) — leveling adds $2–$4/sq ft if the slab is wavy.
  • Buy 10–15% extra tile for cuts and future repairs; dye lots change between production runs.

The part you can't see is the part that matters

Tile itself almost never fails — installations fail. The failure points are subfloor deflection (cracked tile), missing waterproofing (mold), and rushed thinset cure (hollow tiles). A proper shower is: membrane, not just backer board; flood-tested pan, not just a sloped one. Ask any bidder to describe their waterproofing system; one-word answers are a red flag.

FAQ

How much does tile installation cost per square foot?

Floors: $10–$20/sq ft installed with mid-range porcelain. Showers: $15–$30. Backsplashes: $20–$35 due to detail work. Material is typically 30–40% of the total.

Is porcelain or ceramic tile better?

Porcelain for floors and wet areas — denser, harder, more water-resistant, and through-body color hides chips. Ceramic is fine for walls and light-traffic floors at about half the price.

How long does tile installation take?

A 120 sq ft floor is 2–3 days including cure time (thinset needs 24 hours before grouting, grout 72 hours before heavy use). A full walk-in shower runs 4–6 working days.

Can you tile over existing tile?

Technically yes if the existing tile is bonded solid and height transitions work, but it doubles failure modes. Demo at ~$3/sq ft is usually money well spent.
