Self-Compassion Score Calculator

Score self-compassion across self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness — the three components in Neff's model.

Short answer

Self-Compassion Score Calculator

14Self-compassion score

Moderate range. The mindfulness component is usually the easiest entry point for building the other two. You scored 14/32 (44% of the maximum), with 6 of 8 items in the upper half. The single highest item was "Kindness — I'm understanding toward myself when I struggle" — that is usually the most useful thing to bring up first, because specific examples get better help than a general "I've been off lately."

How it's calculated: 14 out of 32 — moderate self-compassion range on this 3-component scale. Adjust the inputs below to recalculate for your own numbers.

Formula used

Self-kindness + common humanity + mindfulness

Neff's model defines self-compassion as three interacting components: kindness rather than judgment, recognising shared human fallibility rather than isolation, and mindful awareness rather than over-identification with painful thoughts.

Self-compassion does not reduce motivation

The most frequent objection is that being kind to yourself makes you soft. The experimental evidence points the other way: self-compassion predicts greater willingness to try again after failure, more accurate self-appraisal, and higher personal standards with lower fear of failure. Self-criticism predicts avoidance, because failure becomes intolerable.

  • Self-criticism raises the stakes of failure, which increases avoidance
  • Self-compassion correlates with taking responsibility, not evading it
  • Brief written self-compassion exercises show measurable effects

Start with the mindfulness component

Of the three components, the mindfulness items are usually the most tractable: noticing 'I am having the thought that I am terrible at this' rather than 'I am terrible at this'. That small separation is what makes the kindness component possible, which is why most protocols sequence them in that order.

FAQ

What is self-compassion?

Treating yourself with the same understanding you would offer a friend, recognising that struggle is part of shared human experience, and holding painful thoughts mindfully rather than fusing with them.

Isn't self-compassion just self-pity?

No — self-pity isolates ('why me'), while self-compassion connects ('this happens to people'). The common humanity component is the explicit difference.

How do you build it?

Structured programmes like Mindful Self-Compassion have trial evidence, and even short written exercises — writing to yourself as you would to a friend — show measurable effects.
