How many subscribers do I need to monetize on YouTube?
Short answer
YouTube Partner Program requires 1,000 subscribers + either 4,000 watch hours (last 12 months) or 10M Shorts views (last 90 days). A 'Lite' tier exists from 500 subscribers for fan funding only.
The full YouTube Partner Program (YPP) requires 1,000 subscribers and one of: 4,000 valid public long-form watch hours in the trailing 12 months, OR 10 million valid Shorts views in the trailing 90 days.
YouTube's 'YPP Lite' tier — available from 500 subscribers, 3,000 watch hours OR 3M Shorts views — unlocks fan funding (Super Thanks, Super Chat, channel memberships) but NOT ad revenue. You still need full YPP for AdSense.
| Segment | Low | Typical | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full Partner Program (ad revenue) | 1,000 subs + 4,000 hrs | 1,000 subs + 4,000 hrs | or 10M Shorts views |
| YPP Lite (fan funding only) | 500 subs + 3,000 hrs | 500 subs + 3,000 hrs | or 3M Shorts views |
| Time to hit thresholds (typical) | 6 months | 12–18 months | 24+ months |
Caveats
- Watch hours from private videos, Shorts, and removed content don't count.
- Channels in restricted regions or with policy strikes can be locked out even with thresholds met.
- Sub count alone is irrelevant for ad revenue — view count and watch time are what scale earnings.
