Plumbing Cost Estimator

Estimate plumbing job costs — fixture installs, repipes, water heaters, and hourly service rates — before you call a plumber.

Short answer

Plumbing Cost Estimator

$383Estimated job cost

Expect quotes between $306 and $517. Fixture swaps are the most quotable plumbing work — flat-rate books price a faucet or toilet swap at 1–2 labor hours plus the fixture itself. After-hours and weekend rates run 1.5–2×.

How it's calculated: Fixture install (~1.5 hr each, parts extra), access-adjusted ×1.16. Adjust the inputs below to recalculate for your own numbers.

Disclaimer: Estimates only — not a quote. Home-services pricing varies widely by region, season, site access, permits, and contractor. Always get 2–3 written local quotes before committing.

Formula used

Plumbing job cost

Plumbers blend flat-rate book pricing with hourly billing. National hourly rates run $75–$150 for a licensed journeyman ($150–$250 for master/emergency). Access — crawlspaces, slabs, finished walls — is the biggest multiplier because it converts wrench time into demolition and patching time.

Worked example: swapping two fixtures at $110/hr

Two fixture installs at 1.5 labor-hours each is 3 hours — $330 at $110/hr — plus the trip fee baked into flat-rate pricing, so a base near $330. Easy access keeps the multiplier at 1.08, landing the estimate around $355 plus the fixtures themselves. Quotes from $285 to $480 are normal; anything over $600 for two swaps is flat-rate book pricing in an expensive metro.

  • Supply your own fixtures and you pay labor only — but many plumbers won't warranty customer-supplied parts.
  • A $350 quote for a $120 faucet swap usually means a 2-hour minimum plus trip fee, not dishonesty.
  • Slab leaks and crawlspace repipes are where access multipliers bite hardest — budget 1.5–2× the open-access price.

Flat-rate vs hourly: which protects you

Flat-rate (book) pricing means the quote doesn't grow if the job runs long — good for complex diagnostics. Hourly is cheaper for quick, well-defined jobs. Always ask which model the quote uses, and whether the trip fee is credited against the work. Permits ($50–$300) are required for water heaters and repipes in most jurisdictions and should appear as a line item.

FAQ

What is a normal plumber hourly rate in 2026?

$75–$150 per hour for licensed plumbers in most US markets, plus a $100–$250 trip or diagnostic fee. Master plumbers and emergency calls run $150–$250.

How much does a whole-house repipe cost?

$4,000–$8,000 for a typical 2-bath house in PEX; copper runs roughly 50% more. Drywall repair after a repipe adds $500–$2,000 if not included.

How much to install a water heater?

A standard 40–50 gallon tank installed runs $1,200–$2,500 including the unit, permit, and haul-away. Tankless installs run $2,500–$4,500.

Do plumbers charge for estimates?

Most charge a trip/diagnostic fee ($100–$250) that is often credited toward the work if you book. Free on-site quotes are common for large jobs like repipes.
