Burnout is not the same as stress
Stressed parents are still engaged; burned-out parents have gone flat. The distancing component — going through the motions, feeling nothing much during moments that used to land — is the defining feature and the reason parental burnout predicts outcomes that ordinary stress does not.
It is caused by imbalance, not by weakness
The dominant model treats parental burnout as chronic imbalance between demands and resources. That means the interventions are resource-side — recovery time, practical help, lowered standards — far more than they are attitude-side.

FAQ
Is parental burnout a real diagnosis?
It is a well-studied construct with a validated research instrument (the Parental Burnout Assessment), though it is not a standalone DSM diagnosis. This tool is educational and is not that instrument.
Does it go away on its own?
Rarely, because the demand/resource imbalance that caused it does not change on its own. It does respond quickly once the balance shifts.
I fantasise about leaving. Is that normal?
It is a common symptom of severe parental burnout and does not mean you do not love your children. It is also a strong signal to get professional support — in the US you can call or text 988 any time.
