Paint Cost Calculator

Work out how many gallons of paint a room or exterior needs and what the job costs with primer, coats, and labor.

Short answer

Paint Cost Calculator

$1,863Estimated paint job cost

Buy 6 gallons — $288 in paint plus $1,575 labor. Five-gallon buckets typically save 10–15% per gallon over four singles, and mixing from one batch avoids visible color shift.

How it's calculated: 900 sq ft × 2 coats ÷ 350 sq ft/gal = 5.2 gallons. Adjust the inputs below to recalculate for your own numbers.

Disclaimer: Estimates only — not a bid. Real construction costs swing with local labor rates, permits, soil and site conditions, material markets, and design choices. Get at least three written quotes from licensed contractors before budgeting.

Formula used

Gallons = (area × coats) ÷ coverage per gallon

Manufacturers quote 350–400 sq ft per gallon on smooth, primed surfaces. Textured drywall, stucco, and bare wood can drop real coverage to 200–250 sq ft, so match the coverage input to the surface you actually have.

Gallons = (SqFt × Coats) ÷ Coverage
Smooth wall coverage
350–400 sq ft/gal
Textured / exterior
200–300 sq ft/gal
Interior labor
$1.50–3.00/sq ft

Where paint estimates go wrong

Two coats is the default, not the exception — a single coat over a color change never covers. Primer is separate from your finish coats and should be calculated on its own coverage rate.

  • Deduct large windows and doors, but not small openings.
  • Ceilings take about 10% more per square foot than walls.
  • Dark-to-light changes may need a tinted primer plus two finish coats.

FAQ

How much paint do I need for a 12x14 room?

Roughly 450 sq ft of wall area, which needs about 2.6 gallons for two coats — buy three gallons.

How much does it cost to paint a house interior?

Professionally, $1.50–3.00 per square foot of surface area including materials, so a typical 1,800 sq ft home runs $3,000–7,000.

How many square feet does a gallon of paint cover?

350–400 square feet on smooth, primed drywall. Expect 200–300 on textured, porous, or exterior surfaces.
