Motorcycle Insurance Calculator

Estimate motorcycle insurance premiums by bike type, engine size, rider age, and coverage level — liability vs full coverage math.

Short answer

Motorcycle Insurance Calculator

$642Estimated annual premium

Sport bikes cost roughly double cruisers to insure at the same value — the loss data is brutal. A safety-course discount (MSF) saves 5–15% at any age, and laying the bike up (comprehensive-only) over winter can cut 30–50% in seasonal climates.

How it's calculated: Full coverage on a $9,000 cruiser/touring. Adjust the inputs below to recalculate for your own numbers.

Disclaimer: Estimates only — not insurance, financial, or legal advice. Actual premiums depend on underwriting, state, carrier, claims history, and credit-based insurance score where permitted. Get quotes from licensed agents before buying coverage.

Formula used

Premium = liability base + 3.5% of value × type & age factors

Motorcycle rates hinge on bike class (sport > standard > cruiser), rider age and record, displacement, and garaging. Full coverage adds comprehensive and collision priced off the bike's value — on older low-value bikes, liability-only plus self-insuring the bike is often the rational move.

Full coverage ≈ ($220 + value × 3.5%) × type × displacement × age multipliers

Liability-only vs full coverage

Rule of thumb: drop collision/comprehensive when the bike's value falls below about 8–10× the annual cost of the physical-damage portion. On a $3,000 bike paying $400/yr for full coverage, you're re-buying the bike every 7–8 years. Keep uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage regardless — riders are disproportionately hit by underinsured drivers.

FAQ

How much is motorcycle insurance per month?

Full coverage averages $40–80/month nationally. Cruisers for experienced riders can run $25/month; a 22-year-old on a 600cc supersport can pay $200+/month. Liability-only on an older bike can be under $15/month.

Why is sportbike insurance so expensive?

Loss data. Supersports have the highest claim frequency and severity of any class — speed capability correlates directly with payouts. A sport bike typically costs 1.5–2.5× a cruiser of the same value to insure.

Does my car insurance cover my motorcycle?

No — motorcycles require their own policy. Some auto insurers bundle both with a multi-policy discount, but the motorcycle always has its own coverage, limits, and premium.
