Life Satisfaction Score Calculator

Score overall life satisfaction across the domains that wellbeing research keeps finding matter — relationships, health, purpose, autonomy, security, and growth.

Short answer

Life Satisfaction Score Calculator

20Life satisfaction score

Some domains are strong and carrying the rest. Worth naming which two are dragging. You scored 20/40 (50% of the maximum), with 10 of 10 items in the upper half. The single highest item was "I have people I can rely on and be known by" — that is usually the most useful thing to bring up first, because specific examples get better help than a general "I've been off lately."

How it's calculated: 20 out of 40 — mixed range on this scale. Adjust the inputs below to recalculate for your own numbers.

Disclaimer: For reflection and self-awareness, not clinical assessment. Scores are based on published, widely used research frameworks but this tool is not a validated instrument and results should be treated as a conversation starter, not a verdict.

Formula used

How the score is calculated

Ten items scored 0–4 and summed to 0–40. Eight domain items cover the areas with the most consistent links to subjective wellbeing — close relationships, health, purpose, autonomy, financial security, growth, enjoyment and acceptance of the past — plus two global evaluation items in the style of the widely used satisfaction-with-life measures.

Total = sum of 10 items (0–4 each) → 0–40 → severity band

Relationships outweigh almost everything else

Across long-running longitudinal studies, the quality of close relationships is the strongest and most durable predictor of both life satisfaction and physical health in later life — outperforming income, cholesterol and career success. If the first item is your lowest, it is also your highest-leverage one.

Income matters most at the bottom

Financial security shows sharply diminishing returns: it strongly predicts wellbeing while basic needs and buffer are unmet, and then flattens considerably. The security item is deliberately about feeling braced rather than about absolute income, because that is the part that keeps tracking.

FAQ

Is this the Satisfaction With Life Scale?

The two global items are written in that style, but this is a broader educational tool, not the validated five-item SWLS.

My score is low. Is that depression?

Not necessarily — low satisfaction and clinical depression overlap but are distinct. If low mood, anhedonia and sleep changes are present, the PHQ-9 tool is a better next step.

How often should I score it?

Every six months. Life satisfaction is fairly stable, so a ten-point move over a year is real signal.
