Destination vs origin sourcing

Kansas is a destination-based sourcing state. The applicable rate is the rate at the customer's delivery address, not your store's. For in-store sales, origin = destination so it doesn't matter. For ecommerce/wholesale, you must look up the buyer's ZIP+4 jurisdiction code on the Kansas DOR site.

Economic nexus (out-of-state sellers)

Kansas requires registration once you exceed $100,000 in Kansas sales in the previous or current calendar year. There is no transaction-count test as of 2026 (Kansas dropped it). Marketplace facilitators (Amazon, eBay, Etsy) collect on your behalf for marketplace sales — those count toward the threshold but don't require you to file separately.

Grocery food fully exempt at state level (2026)

Kansas phased out the state grocery sales tax: 6.5% → 4% (Jan 2023) → 2% (Jan 2024) → 0% (Jan 2025). Most local rates also dropped or were eliminated for groceries. Prepared food, restaurant meals, candy, soft drinks, and dietary supplements are not 'grocery food' and remain fully taxable.

FAQ

What's the Kansas state sales tax rate in 2026?

6.5% on most goods and services. Groceries are 0% at the state level since January 2025.

Does Kansas tax shipping?

Yes, when separately stated and the shipment includes taxable items. If the entire order is exempt, shipping is exempt.

Who pays Kansas sales tax — buyer or seller?

The seller is liable to remit, but they collect it from the buyer at the point of sale. If the seller doesn't collect, the buyer owes use tax directly to the Kansas DOR.
