FSA Contribution Calculator

Right-size your 2026 health FSA election — estimate tax savings and avoid forfeiting money under use-it-or-lose-it rules.

Short answer

FSA Contribution Calculator

$380Estimated annual tax savings

FSA savings are real but balances are fragile: most plans let you carry over only ~$640 or offer a 2.5-month grace period. Elect only what you'll provably spend — forfeiting $120 wipes out a third of the tax benefit.

How it's calculated: $1,200 sheltered ($1,200 health + $0 dependent care) at 24% + FICA. Adjust the inputs below to recalculate for your own numbers.

Disclaimer: Estimates only — not insurance, tax, or legal advice. Actual premiums depend on underwriting, state, carrier, claims history, and plan details. Confirm numbers with a licensed agent, broker, or Healthcare.gov before acting.

Formula used

Savings = election × (tax rate + 7.65%)

FSAs skip income and payroll tax like HSAs but with a catch: unspent money is largely forfeited at year-end. The correct election is your floor of certain spending, not your expected average.

FSA saving = (health + dependent-care election) × marginal rate incl. payroll tax

FSA vs HSA — they're not interchangeable

HSA requires a high-deductible plan, rolls over forever, and invests. FSA works with any plan but expires. If you have the HSA option, it dominates — the FSA is the consolation prize for PPO enrollees, and the dependent-care FSA is its best use (daycare is a guaranteed spend).

  • The full health FSA election is available day one — even before you've contributed.
  • Stock the eligible-items list: sunscreen, first aid, contacts solution all count.
  • Run out the carryover before March or it's gone.

FAQ

How much should I put in my FSA?

Only your guaranteed floor: recurring prescriptions, planned dental work, glasses, therapy sessions. A common safe election is last year's actual FSA-eligible spend minus 10–15%.

What happens to unused FSA money?

It's forfeited to your employer, minus any carryover (~$640) or grace period (2.5 months) your plan offers — plans can offer one or neither, not both.

Can I have an FSA and an HSA?

Not a general health FSA — it disqualifies HSA contributions. A limited-purpose FSA (dental and vision only) is allowed alongside an HSA and is a smart pairing.
