Emotional Intelligence Score Calculator

Score emotional intelligence across self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skill — the five classic EQ domains.

Short answer

Emotional Intelligence Score Calculator

26EQ score

Strong range. You read situations well; the growth edge is usually regulation under pressure rather than perception. You scored 26/40 (65% of the maximum), with 10 of 10 items in the upper half. The single highest item was "I can name what I'm feeling as it happens" — that is usually the most useful thing to bring up first, because specific examples get better help than a general "I've been off lately."

How it's calculated: 26 out of 40 — strong eq range on this 5-domain self-report. Adjust the inputs below to recalculate for your own numbers.

Formula used

Five domains × two items, 0–4 each

Goleman's five-domain model remains the most widely used practical framing of emotional intelligence. Self-report measures like this one capture trait EQ; ability EQ tests use performance tasks instead.

Self-awareness is the bottleneck domain

The five domains are not independent. Regulation depends on noticing the state early enough to intervene, and empathy depends on being able to separate your reaction from theirs. That is why interventions almost always start with labelling emotions — affect labelling measurably reduces amygdala response.

  • Name it to tame it is a real, replicated effect
  • Regulation improves with rehearsed pauses, not with willpower
  • Empathy accuracy improves faster with feedback than with effort

What self-report EQ can and can't tell you

Self-report measures trait EQ — your typical self-perception — and correlates moderately with how colleagues rate you. People at the extremes are the least accurate about themselves, so if this score surprises you in either direction, a 360-style question to three people you trust is worth more than retaking the test.

FAQ

What is a good EQ score?

On this 0–40 scale, 26 and above is strong. There is no universal EQ scale the way there is for IQ, so treat bands as relative rather than absolute.

Can emotional intelligence be improved?

Yes — unlike IQ, the component skills respond to deliberate practice and feedback, especially self-regulation and empathy accuracy.

Does EQ predict job performance?

It predicts performance modestly overall and much more strongly in roles that are emotionally demanding, such as sales, care work, and people management.
