YouTube Partner Program & monetisation in Switzerland

  • Standard YPP thresholds apply.
  • Full monetisation features available.

US withholding & tax reporting in Switzerland

Step 1 — File W-8BEN in AdSense

Google must withhold US tax on the share of your revenue that comes from US viewers. The default rate is 30%. Filing W-8BEN in AdSense > Payments > Tax info under the US–Switzerland treaty drops it to 0%. Skipping this step is the most expensive unforced error a non-US creator can make.

Step 2 — Report locally in Switzerland

Federal + cantonal + municipal income tax combined runs 18–45% depending on canton (Zug far lower than Geneva). AHV/IV ~10% on self-employment income. VAT only above CHF 100k turnover; AdSense exports are out of scope. W-8BEN zeros US withholding.

Tax rules change. This is general information, not tax advice — confirm specifics with a local accountant before filing.

Honest take: what most Switzerland creators get wrong

Canton choice matters more than almost any other tax decision in Switzerland — a creator in Zug pays materially less than the same creator in Geneva. If you have residency flexibility, this is worth a real conversation with a Swiss tax advisor before settling.
