  "summary": "Standard duty plus any additional tariff rate on your declared value.",
  "description": "Import duty and tariffs are calculated as a percentage of the customs value of goods, generally the price paid or payable (often close to your FOB or ex-works value), not your retail price or landed cost. On top of standard Most Favored Nation duty rates, many products from specific countries carry additional Section 301, anti-dumping, or countervailing duties that stack on top of the base rate. This calculator applies a base duty rate and an additional tariff rate to your declared shipment value, plus the Merchandise Processing Fee that U.S. Customs charges on nearly all formal entries. Enter your total declared goods value, base duty rate, additional tariff rate if applicable, and whether the Merchandise Processing Fee applies. The output shows total duty and fees owed and the effective combined rate, which is the number you should actually use when estimating landed cost rather than relying on the headline duty rate alone.",
  "formula": "Total duty = value × (base rate% + additional tariff%); MPF = clamp(value × 0.3464%, $32.71, $634.62); Total owed = duty + MPF.",

  "faq": [
    {
      "q": "What's the difference between duty and tariff?",
      "a": "In practice they're often used interchangeably, but 'duty' typically refers to the standard Most Favored Nation rate applied to all imports of that HTS code, while 'tariff' more often refers to additional country- or policy-specific charges layered on top, like Section 301 actions targeting Chinese goods."
    },
    {
      "q": "What is the Merchandise Processing Fee?",
      "a": "It's a U.S. Customs fee for processing formal entries, calculated at 0.3464% of the entered value, with a minimum of $32.71 and maximum of $634.62 per entry as of recent schedules. Informal entries under $2,500 are typically exempt, and it applies regardless of duty rate."
    },
    {
      "q": "Does declared value include freight and insurance?",
      "a": "It depends on the valuation method; for most U.S. imports customs value is based on the transaction value (price paid or payable) which typically excludes international freight and insurance if separately identified, but confirm the specific Incoterm and invoice structure with your broker."
    },
    {
      "q": "How do additional tariffs get applied or removed?",
      "a": "They're tied to specific HTS codes and country of origin combinations set by trade policy actions, and they change with political and trade negotiation cycles. Check the current Federal Register notices or your customs broker for the live rate on your product before committing to a large order."
