  "summary": "Revenue, direct cost, and margin for a scheduled surgical block.",
  "description": "Surgery days tie up a doctor, a technician or two, anesthesia consumables, and a dedicated recovery space, so the block needs to clear a real margin to justify the staffing pulled from the rest of the schedule. This calculator adds up the revenue from all cases booked in a surgical block, subtracts direct variable costs (anesthesia drugs, monitoring consumables, suture, and any surgical pack costs), then subtracts the labor cost of staff dedicated to the block for the day, producing a net margin and a per-case contribution figure useful for deciding whether to open another block or fill open slots with lower-acuity procedures like dentals.",
  "formula": "Block margin = total case revenue − variable supply cost − dedicated staff labor for the block.",

    {
      "q": "What counts as dedicated staff labor for the block?",
      "a": "The wages for the technician(s) and any support staff whose day is committed to the surgical suite rather than floating to exams or hygiene. If staff split time between surgery and other duties, allocate labor cost proportionally to the hours actually spent on the block."
    },
    {
      "q": "How many cases does a block need to break even?",
      "a": "Set net margin to zero and solve for cases: staff labor divided by (average revenue minus average variable cost) per case. With the default numbers that's roughly 680 ÷ (650 − 95) ≈ 1.2 cases, meaning even a light block covers its dedicated labor quickly, but margin builds fastest once cases exceed that floor."
    },
    {
      "q": "Should anesthesia monitoring equipment depreciation be included?",
      "a": "For a quick per-block check, no — that's a fixed cost better handled in the practice-wide overhead calculation. Include it if you're doing a full standalone P&L for the surgery service line rather than a day-to-day scheduling decision."
