  "summary": "Material utilization percentage and scrap cost from a sheet nest.",
  "description": "Nesting yield tells you what fraction of a raw sheet actually becomes finished parts versus drop and skeleton scrap, and it's often the single biggest lever on material cost for laser, plasma, and waterjet cutting shops where raw material is the dominant cost driver, more than machine time or labor. This calculator takes your sheet size, the number of parts nested per sheet, and each part's net area, then reports utilization percentage and the dollar cost of scrap per sheet and per part. A good nest for rectangular or near-rectangular parts should hit 75-85% utilization; irregular or curved parts often land at 50-70% even with good nesting software, and that's normal, not a failure. Use this to compare nesting software outputs, decide whether a different sheet size reduces scrap, or negotiate remnant/drop credit into your material cost accounting since usable drop offsets some of that scrap cost.",
  "formula": "Utilization % = (Parts × Part Area) ÷ Sheet Area. Scrap Cost = Sheet Cost × (1 − Utilization%). Cost per Part (material) = Sheet Cost ÷ Parts per Sheet.",

    {
      "q": "What's a good utilization target?",
      "a": "75-85% is solid for rectangular or blocky parts on standard sheet sizes. Highly irregular shapes, parts with large cutouts, or small-batch jobs where common-lining and true-shape nesting isn't worth the setup time often land at 50-65%, which is acceptable if the alternative is expensive nesting software time that exceeds the material savings."
    },
    {
      "q": "Does drop/remnant material offset scrap cost?",
      "a": "Partially — if your shop tracks and reuses remnants for smaller jobs, you should credit back an estimated remnant value (many shops use 20-40% of virgin material cost) against the scrap cost shown here rather than treating 100% of unused area as a total loss."
    },
    {
      "q": "How much does sheet size choice affect yield?",
      "a": "Significantly. Standard sheet sizes (48x96, 60x120, 4x10) rarely match your part geometry perfectly. Custom or coil-fed blank sizes matched to part dimensions can push utilization 10-20 points higher, but only pay off if your volume justifies the special-order material lead time and cost premium."
    },
    {
      "q": "Should scrap cost include cutting time on the skeleton?",
      "a": "This calculator only prices raw material scrap. If your laser or plasma also cuts through skeleton area (pierces, travel moves), add that cycle time cost separately using a laser cutting cost calculator, since scrap area still consumes machine time even though it produces no part."
