  "summary": "Quantify how much you're spending on impressions beyond the point where they still help.",
  "description": "Response to an ad drops sharply after a handful of exposures per person per week — most response curves show diminishing returns after 3-5 exposures and can turn negative (annoyance, brand fatigue, active ad-blocking behavior) well beyond that. This calculator takes your actual average frequency, an effective frequency threshold past which additional impressions add little value, and your CPM, and estimates how much of your spend is going toward impressions beyond that useful point. It compares your current spend to what you'd spend if you capped frequency at the effective threshold and reallocated the freed budget to reach. A campaign averaging 9 impressions per person against an effective cap of 4 is spending more than half its budget on impressions unlikely to move anyone who hasn't already responded, and that reach could instead go toward new audience members who haven't seen the ad at all. Frequency waste is most severe in narrow retargeting pools and small geographic campaigns where the platform keeps re-showing ads to the same limited audience once it exhausts fresh reach.",
  "formula": "Wasted impression share = max(0, (avgFrequency − effectiveCap) ÷ avgFrequency); wasted spend = total spend × wasted impression share.",

    {
      "q": "How do I find my effective frequency threshold?",
      "a": "Run a frequency-split lift or brand study, comparing response rates at 1-2, 3-5, and 6+ exposure buckets. Without primary data, 3-5 for direct response and awareness campaigns, and up to 7-8 for complex B2B or considered purchases, are reasonable starting benchmarks from published ad-effectiveness research."
    },
    {
      "q": "Why is frequency waste worse in retargeting?",
      "a": "Retargeting pools are inherently small and fixed — once you've served everyone who visited your site recently, the platform has no choice but to keep re-showing ads to the same people if the budget isn't capped, since there's no fresh audience to spend into."
    },
    {
      "q": "Does capping frequency actually improve results?",
      "a": "Usually yes for the reallocated budget, since it buys reach among people who haven't seen the ad at all, which almost always has a better marginal response than a 9th impression to someone who's already decided not to convert. The gain isn't guaranteed if your uncapped reach pool is already fully saturated."
    },
    {
      "q": "Should frequency caps be the same across all campaign types?",
      "a": "No. Awareness and brand campaigns can sustain slightly higher effective frequency than direct-response retargeting, where anyone who hasn't converted after several exposures is unlikely to convert from more of the same creative without a change in offer or message."
