  "summary": "Estimate what a fiscal sponsor should charge (or you should budget) for admin fees.",
  "description": "Fiscal sponsors typically charge 5-10% of a sponsored project's revenue to cover the real administrative burden of pass-through grantmaking: processing payments, issuing tax receipts, filing consolidated 990s, HR and payroll if staff are employed, insurance, and legal liability the sponsor absorbs. This calculator takes a sponsored project's projected annual revenue, applies a fee percentage, and compares the resulting fee dollars against your estimated actual cost to administer that project, so you can tell whether your rate is underpricing the real burden (common with comprehensive Model A sponsorship where the sponsor takes on full HR and legal responsibility) or overcharging relative to a lighter-touch Model C or grantor-grantee relationship.",
  "formula": "Fee $ = project revenue × fee rate; margin = fee $ − actual admin cost to serve that project.",

  "faq": [
    {
      "q": "What's a typical fiscal sponsorship fee range?",
      "a": "Model A comprehensive sponsorship, where the sponsor employs project staff and takes on full legal and financial liability, typically runs 8-10% of project revenue. Lighter Model C pre-approved grant relationships, where the sponsor mainly provides tax-exempt pass-through and grant administration, often run 5-7%."
    },
    {
      "q": "What should the fee actually cover?",
      "a": "Bookkeeping and financial reporting for the project, tax receipt issuance to project donors, inclusion in the sponsor's consolidated audit and Form 990, insurance coverage, HR/payroll administration if staff are employed by the sponsor, and the sponsor's legal liability for the project's compliance."
    },
    {
      "q": "Can the fee be a flat dollar amount instead of a percentage?",
      "a": "Yes, some sponsors use flat monthly fees or tiered flat fees for small projects, since a percentage fee on a very small project might not cover the fixed administrative cost of onboarding and monthly bookkeeping regardless of revenue size."
    },
    {
      "q": "What happens if the fee doesn't cover actual admin cost?",
      "a": "The sponsor is effectively subsidizing that project from its own general operating funds, which is unsustainable across a portfolio of projects. If your margin analysis is consistently negative, raise the fee rate or add a minimum flat fee for smaller projects before taking on new sponsored initiatives."
