  "summary": "Annual per-truck cost of drug testing, ELD, IFTA, and inspections.",
  "description": "DOT compliance is a real, recurring line item that owner-operators and small fleets often forget to price into their cost per mile. This calculator adds up the recurring compliance costs — ELD subscription, drug and alcohol consortium fees, annual inspection (DOT/BIT), UCR registration, IRP/IFTA administrative costs, and driver file/DQ file management — into an annual total and a per-truck monthly figure. Add this monthly number into your fixed cost bucket when computing cost per mile; it's usually $150-350 per truck per month and gets skipped by operators who only think about truck payment and insurance as fixed costs.",
  "formula": "Annual compliance cost = sum of recurring fees; monthly = annual ÷ 12.",

      "q": "Is this cost avoidable?",

    {
      "q": "How should I use this number?",
      "a": "Add the monthly figure into the fixed-cost input of the owner-operator cost-per-mile calculator alongside truck payment and insurance — compliance is a real fixed cost, not a rounding error, especially for single-truck operations where it's not diluted across many trucks."
