  "description": "Filing a civil lawsuit costs more than the headline court filing fee, which itself varies widely by state and court level, from around $50-$100 in small claims to $200-$450+ in state or federal civil court. You'll also pay to serve the defendant, either through a sheriff's office ($30-$75) or a private process server ($50-$150 depending on how many attempts are needed and whether the defendant is evasive), plus certified mail fees if that's permitted in your jurisdiction. Add copy and certification fees for exhibits, and if you eventually win, some or all of these costs may be recoverable from the losing party depending on state rules.
