  "summary": "Find the minimum enrolled children a classroom needs to cover its costs.",
  "description": "Every classroom has a fixed cost floor: teacher salaries, a share of rent and utilities, materials, and insurance, whether you have 6 kids enrolled or 20. This calculator divides total monthly classroom cost by net tuition per child (after any average discount or subsidy shortfall) to find the breakeven headcount, then compares it to your current enrollment to show margin or shortfall in dollars. It's the number directors should watch weekly during enrollment season, because a classroom sitting two kids below breakeven is quietly bleeding money even if the rest of the center looks healthy. The calculation assumes classroom-level fixed costs are already allocated (teacher pay plus a per-classroom share of facility overhead) and that tuition is net of typical discounts, since gross tuition overstates what actually lands. Run this per classroom rather than center-wide, because ratios and staffing costs differ sharply between an infant room and a pre-K room even when facility overhead is similar.",
  "formula": "Breakeven children = fixed classroom cost ÷ net tuition per child; monthly margin = (enrolled − breakeven) × net tuition per child.",

    {
      "q": "What counts as 'allocated overhead' for one classroom?",
      "a": "Take center-wide rent, utilities, liability insurance, and admin salaries, then divide by square footage or headcount share. A simple method: overhead per classroom = total center overhead ÷ number of classrooms, adjusted up or down if one room is unusually large. It doesn't need to be perfect, just consistent month to month so trends are meaningful."
    },
    {
      "q": "Why net tuition instead of the sticker price?",
      "a": "Sibling discounts, employer partnerships, subsidy underpayment relative to private-pay rates, and financial aid all shrink what actually hits the bank. If breakeven, using sticker tuition typically understates by 10-20%, which makes a struggling classroom look fine on paper while it loses money in reality."
    },
    {
      "q": "What if breakeven enrollment is above licensed capacity?",
      "a": "That means the classroom cannot be profitable even fully enrolled at current staffing and tuition levels. You need to either raise tuition, add capacity, cut allocated cost (fewer support staff, cheaper overhead allocation), or accept the room as a loss-leader that drives enrollment into other classrooms."
    },
    {
      "q": "How often should I recalculate this?",
      "a": "Monthly, tied to your enrollment report. Tuition mix shifts as families enter and leave financial aid, and staffing cost shifts with raises and turnover, so a number that was accurate in September can be stale by January."
