  "summary": "Adjusted 205-day weaning weight and sale value for a calf crop.",
  "description": "Raw weaning weights aren't comparable across a herd unless you adjust for the calf's actual age and the dam's age, since a 210-day-old calf out of a 3-year-old first-calf heifer isn't the same animal as a 195-day calf out of a mature cow. This calculator applies the standard BIF adjusted 205-day weaning weight formula, then converts the adjusted weight into an estimated sale value using a price slide, since lighter calves sell at a higher price per pound than heavier ones in most feeder cattle markets. Use it to rank calves within a herd for replacement selection or to estimate what a fall calf crop will actually bring before you haul them to the sale barn.",
  "formula": "Adj WW = ((actual WW − birth wt) ÷ age in days × 205) + birth wt + age-of-dam adjustment; sale value = adj WW × (base price − slide × (weight − base weight)/100).",

  "faq": [
    {
      "q": "Why adjust to 205 days instead of using the raw weight?",
      "a": "Calves are weaned across a range of ages depending on breeding season spread, sometimes 60+ days apart within one calf crop. Standardizing to 205 days removes that age bias so you're comparing genetic and management performance, not just which calf happened to be born earliest."
    },
    {
      "q": "What is a typical age-of-dam adjustment?",
      "a": "BIF tables add roughly 60 lb for calves out of 2-year-old dams, 40 lb for 3-year-olds, 20 lb for 4-year-olds, down to zero for mature 6-10 year old cows, since younger dams are still growing themselves and produce lighter calves independent of genetics."
    },
    {
      "q": "Why does the price slide work against heavier calves?",
      "a": "Feedlots pay more per pound for lighter calves because they have more days of cheap gain ahead of them and a longer window to hit market weight. An 800 lb calf costs a buyer less per pound of purchase but more per pound of the gain still needed, which the slide reflects."
    },
    {
      "q": "How is this useful beyond sale price?",
      "a": "Ranking cows by their calves' adjusted weaning weight is one of the most direct tools for culling decisions — cows whose calves consistently rank in the bottom quartile after adjustment for age and calf sex are usually the first culling candidates."
